Relationship Over Reach

Relationship Over Reach Only Works If You Know How to Lead It

I’ve been noticing something in my conversations with women entrepreneurs lately. There is a real desire to build businesses through relationship, through meaningful connection, and through communities that feel aligned and supportive.

I wholeheartedly believe this. It reflects a deeper shift in how women are growing their businesses, and in many ways, it is true.

Women are craving deeper connection. Clients are choosing who they trust. Community and conversation are shaping how business grows.

And there is something else that needs to be said.

Relationships on their own don’t create clients. Led relationships do.

I see this show up in a few different ways in the women I work with.

  • There is the woman who has spent years building strong relationships and is quietly wondering why those relationships aren’t translating into consistent referrals or clients.
  • There is the woman who is thoughtful about where she spends her time and energy, wanting to invest in the right rooms and the right connections, yet questioning if she is focusing in the right places.
  • There is the woman who shows up, connects easily, and builds rapport, yet feels unsure how to guide those relationships into something more meaningful for her business.

All of them are building something real. They are creating connection, and that matters deeply.

What’s often missing is leadership inside the relationship.

When you lead a relationship, you are bringing intention to how it unfolds. You are aware of where there is alignment, and you are willing to guide the connection toward something more meaningful. You stay in the conversation, you notice what is emerging, and you give it direction.

Relationships grow over time through a series of intentional touchpoints. A conversation, a thoughtful follow-up, a shared insight, an invitation, a moment of reconnection. Each touchpoint builds familiarity, deepens trust, and keeps the relationship alive in a way that feels natural and aligned. When that rhythm is present, relationships begin to move forward. Without it, they often remain warm, but static.

It also means recognizing that not all relationships are meant to hold the same level of energy in your business.

There is a difference between connection and alignment.

You may meet many people, enjoy conversations, and appreciate the exchange. At the same time, there are certain relationships where you can feel something more. There is resonance. There is shared vision. There is a natural sense that the connection could continue to grow and move forward.

Most of us can feel this fairly quickly.

Part of leading relationships is trusting what you notice in those early moments and allowing that awareness to guide where you invest your time and energy. Not every relationship is meant to become a client, a collaborator, or a referral partner, and that is part of the design of a healthy, sustainable business.

When you try to hold every relationship at the same level, your energy becomes diluted and your business can begin to feel heavier than it needs to. When you are more selective, when you allow yourself to prioritize the relationships that feel aligned and expansive, something begins to shift. You show up more fully, your conversations deepen, and your relationships begin to carry momentum.

This is not about closing yourself off. It is about honoring where there is real potential for growth, for collaboration, and for shared impact.

Over time, your relationships begin to feel more alive, your conversations carry more depth and direction, and your business begins to grow from the connections you are already building.

This is the difference between hoping relationships will lead somewhere and knowing how to guide them.

A few reflections to consider.

Take a moment to look at the relationships in your business right now.

  1. What is the rhythm of connection you are creating with the people who come into your world? When you meet someone you feel aligned with, how are you staying in touch? Are you inviting them into your world in a meaningful way, whether through your content, your conversations, or your community? Where are there opportunities to continue the connection, to support them, and to allow the relationship to grow over time?
  1. How are you keeping track of the relationships and conversations that matter? As you meet people and have meaningful exchanges, what is your way of holding those connections so they don’t get lost? This could be something simple like a written notebook, a spreadsheet, a CRM, or a tool like a Trello board. The structure itself matters less than your intention to stay connected and to continue nurturing the relationships you are building.
  1. Who are your true collaboration partners? Consider keeping this to a small handful of people who serve a similar audience in a different way and who feel deeply aligned with your values. Notice where there is a natural connection and a shared desire to support one another, and consider how you can be more intentional in nurturing those relationships over time.

This is not about doing more. It is about leading what is already in front of you.
