Innovation in Times of Market Disruption: How Are You Adapting?

The market feels chaotic right now. Economic shifts, uncertainty, and disruption are making headlines daily. But if history has shown us anything, it’s that moments like these spark some of the most significant innovations.

I know this firsthand. I started my business in 2009, right in the middle of an economic downturn. The world had changed, and my women executive clients were searching for their what’s next. They weren’t just making career moves; they were redefining how they wanted to show up in the world. Many went on to launch new businesses, shift industries, or step into leadership in ways they never had before.

History is filled with stories like these. Some of the most successful companies of our time were born in downturns:

  • Airbnb (2008) – With travel declining and people looking for ways to make extra money, two designers rented out air mattresses in their San Francisco apartment. What started as “AirBed & Breakfast” became a global hospitality revolution.
  • Uber (2009) – Two entrepreneurs, frustrated with the difficulty of hailing a cab in Paris, saw an opportunity to rethink transportation. They launched Uber, which would go on to redefine how people move through cities.
  • Slack (2009) – Originally built as an internal tool for a gaming company, Slack pivoted into a workplace communication platform at a time when businesses were looking for more efficient ways to collaborate.

These companies weren’t simply reacting to economic challenges—they were asking: How can we serve people differently in this moment?

That’s the conversation I’ve been having with my clients lately. Some are pivoting to meet new market needs. Others are staying the course but adapting how they serve their client base. In every case, the key is stepping into the mind of your ideal clients and asking:

  • What do they need most right now?
  • How can I make their lives easier in this moment?
  • Where is an opportunity to innovate, even if it’s just a small shift?

Disruption creates space for reinvention.

In times like these, when the world feels off-kilter and you’re asking, ‘What now?’—this is exactly where my strategic mind thrives. I love diving into these kinds of conversations.
