It was just a matter of time before someone wrote those words (thanks, Helen Reddy, for giving women a purpose), but they are truer today than they were when she sang them. Women have come a long way since their liberation in the late 60s and early 70s, but they are going in a different direction now.
What began as liberation has evolved into personal development, individual empowerment and collective soul. The “helping people” banner that is transforming our world is being used by women to uplift each other, to drive each other to greater heights, more blinding success and deeper happiness.
One Word . . .Oprah
A woman who worked her way up from actress to the voice of women world-wide, Oprah Winfrey believes that every woman needs to succeed. This woman believed in herself strongly, refused to kow-tow to the controlling minds of the times and quietly spoke her message to women.
She built an empire that helps people around the world, empowers women and sets a shining example of “what belief in your purpose” can accomplish. It’s not easy to shut down the voices of those trying to keep you stuck in “the way it’s always been done.” It’s even harder to clear the mind of that little voice in the back of your head saying “you can’t do that.” Oprah said “why not?” and then showed us all how to do it.
It’s About You
At some point in your life, you’re going to look into a mirror and say “is this all there is?” At that point, something inside you will clench. A light will blaze in your mind. A new woman will be born, one who will dig deep inside herself for the answers that only she knows. She will look around her world, find its weaknesses and work to make them strengths. She will look for an example to the women who have built a life of their own, doing their thing and doing it with the blinding light of success. You will recognize her as the woman you always thought you had in you, but she was drowned out by those voices trying to keep her under control.
You’re Not Alone
Women are seeking their life’s purpose happens in masses today. It’s not an economic thing, although that is a large part of it. It’s not religious. It’s not even social, because women are reaching out to other women, making them stronger and more aware. These things are just a framework, a way to think of ourselves. Our job is to think for ourselves instead of about ourselves. To do that, we need to discover our path and then strike out boldly for our destination. Arriving there with a crash and loving it is our journey.
We all need some mentorship, some support and some society when we venture out as big as finding our true purpose. It takes courage!
